A Call to Freedom

In our pursuit of freedom from our bondage to sin (which leads to death - see last issue of MEM) we need to cry out to the Eternal One for deliverance.

Israel’s history is a type of our struggle to remain free.

Exodus 2:23 …And the sons of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried out; and their cry for help because of their bondage rose up to God. (NAS unless indicated)

The Egyptian slavery can be regarded as a type of our sin bondage.

Exodus 3:7 And the LORD said, "I have surely seen the affliction of My people who are in Egypt, and have given heed to their cry because of their taskmasters, for I am aware of their sufferings. 8 So I have come down to deliver them from the power of the Egyptians … 10 …so that you may bring My people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt."

Exodus 5:1 …Moses and Aaron came and said to Pharaoh, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, 'Let My people go …'"

Freedom:

1. ability to act freely

2. release from captivity or slavery

3. right to act or speak freely

4. absence of something unpleasant

5. ease of movement

6. the ability to exercise free will and make choices independently of any external force

Synonyms: liberty, autonomy, lack of restrictions, self-determination, independence, choice

The Antonym for freedom: Bondage, Restriction

****

Do you feel like you are still in bondage? There is only one way to true freedom.

John 8:34 Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. … 36 If therefore the Son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.

Every human being must recognize their need to be set free from the power of sin. Yeshua (Jesus) is the answer. He will release us from all guilt, and shame. He will give us the power to overcome our proclivity to sin. Yeshua can free us from stress, emotional anxieties, inappropriate thoughts, worries, doubts, addictions, even a wavering of our faith. Ah, true freedom, real peace and joy; with the blessed hope of eternal life in Yeshua.

****

Our Bondage is to sin:

Rom 7:14 … but I am of flesh, sold into bondage to sin.

The question is:

Rom 7:24 Who will set me free from the body of this death?

The answer:

Rom 7:25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! …

Rom 6:18 freed from sin…

How?

Eph 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus you …have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For He Himself is our peace …

John the Baptist proclaimed:

John 1:29 …"Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

The Apostle John tells us:

1John 1:7 …and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.

Yeshua sets us free from sin and death:

Rom 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.

****

A choice - every moment we must chose between fleshly desires and the Spirit of life. Some might think a one time confession is all that is needed. Scripture indicates an ongoing need to be empowered - a continuing process - to walk in YHVH’s presence.

Gal 5:17 …the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.

Rom 8:6 For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace

Rom 8:12 So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh --

****

Our Savior has given us all the power (grace) necessary to make right choices and to deny (overcome) the pulls of the flesh. Is there any pull that is hindering you from living a life free of bondage to sin? Can you recognize the false values or pulls inspired by the prince of the power of the air (Satan)? Call out to YHVH, repent, and receive the grace to live in freedom.

Isa 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, Because the LORD has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives, And freedom to prisoners;

****

We have been set free - If...

Gal 5:24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.

Called to freedom - a new life:

Gal 5:13 NLT For you have been called to live in freedom-- not freedom to satisfy your sinful nature, but freedom to serve one another in love.

Romans 6:1 … Are we to continue in sin that grace might increase? 2 May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

YHVH heard and intervened:

Ps 34:4 NLT I prayed to the LORD, and he answered me, freeing me from all my fears.

Ps 34:22 NLT But the LORD will redeem those who serve him. Everyone who trusts in him will be freely pardoned.

Eph 2:4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places, in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

****

Write these on a card and tape them to your mirror:

Yeshua Promises:

Matthew 11:28 "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.

John 8:32 and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

John 8:36 "If therefore the Son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.

John 5:24 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.

Paul proclaims:

Acts 13:38 "Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through Him (Yeshua) forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, 39 and through Him everyone who believes is freed from all things…

Rom 6:6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, that our body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin; 7 for he who has died is freed from sin.

Col 1:13 For He delivered us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son,

Encouragement:

Gal 5:1 It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.

2 Corinthians 3:17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

2 Peter 1:4 For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, in order that by them you might become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.

Titus 3:5 He saved us, … 7 that being justified by His grace we might be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

So That:

1 Thessalonians 2:12 so that you may walk in a manner worthy of the God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.

1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

Eph 5:11 And do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them;

****

Therefore We say with Andrew Murray:

"To how many of us has it been a new joy in the Christian life to know that we may yield ourselves as servants, as slaves to God and to find that His service is our highest liberty-freedom from sin and self?"

1 Peter 1:2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, that you may obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be yours in fullest measure.

Thy Kingdom come… Amen

Proverbs

The freedom to choose:

Proverbs 1:29 …And did not choose the fear of the LORD.

Proverbs 3:31 Do not envy a man of violence, And do not choose any of his ways.

Wisdom Speaking:

Proverbs 8:32 "Now therefore, O sons, listen to me, For blessed are they who keep my ways.

33 "Heed instruction and be wise, And do not neglect it.

34 "Blessed is the man who listens to me, Watching daily at my gates, Waiting at my doorposts.

35 "For he who finds me finds life, And obtains favor from the LORD.

36 "But he who sins against me injures himself; All those who hate me love death."

YHVH’s Word gives us instruction whereby we may have life. He has also granted us the freedom to decide how we want to live. He admonishes us to choose life yet he wants us to do it willingly not out of constraint. Our Savior had choices when here as man - He chose to do the will of the Father. He is our wisdom.

****

Master Yeshua fill us with Your wisdom - empowering us to choose life.

Saying (s)

"Four steps to accomplishment 1) Plan purposefully, 2) Prepare prayerfully, 3) Proceed positively, 4) Pursue persistently."

Those chosen to represent the Kingdom of God have the freedom to implement a course of action that will lead to success or failure. The above list is a place to start - it takes purpose to accomplish the will of God - Choose Life.

1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

****

Father in heaven may we yield to Your will - we trust You to accomplish Your purpose in us.

Humility

In our pursuit of humility:

(Lessons from humility and faith.)

"We have only to think for a moment what faith is. Is it not a confession of helplessness, the surrender to God that waits to let Him work? Is it not in itself the most humbling thing there can be-the acceptance of our place as dependents who can claim, or get, or do nothing but what grace bestows?" Andrew Murray

****

Faith: When we realize and acknowledge our inability to keep or do what is right on our own - When we call on the Almighty One to free us from our bondage to un-righteousness - Then we become servants to Yeshua, humbling ourselves to His will and leading in our lives. Yeshua then bestows the grace (power) to walk in true freedom, trusting Him to do as He has promised.

Acts 26:18 to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, in order that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.'
Hebrews 10:22 let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

****

Yeshua, Savior, we accept our place as dependents of Your wise bestowment - for you love us.

Prayer

Understanding the precepts of prayer.

In 1 Chronicles 17 is the prayer of David to YHVH. David had a heart for the Almighty. This prayer is about the coming Savior and the possession of the future Kingdom. What points might we learn from this prayer when we approach our Creator?

1Chr 17:16 Then David the king went in and sat before the LORD and said, "Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my house that Thou hast brought me this far? 17 And this (see verses 1-15) was a small thing in Thine eyes, O God; but Thou hast spoken of Thy servant's house for a great while to come, and hast regarded me according to the standard of a man of high degree, O LORD God. 18 What more can David still say to Thee concerning the honor bestowed on Thy servant? For Thou knowest Thy servant. 19 O LORD, for Thy servant's sake, and according to Thine own heart, Thou hast wrought all this greatness, to make known all these great things. 20 O LORD, there is none like Thee, neither is there any God besides Thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

1Chr 17:21 And what one nation in the earth is like Thy people Israel, whom God went to redeem for Himself as a people, to make Thee a name by great and terrible things, in driving out nations from before Thy people, whom Thou didst redeem out of Egypt? 22 For Thy people Israel Thou didst make Thine own people forever, and Thou, O LORD, didst become their God.

1Chr 17:23 And now, O LORD, let the word that Thou hast spoken concerning Thy servant and concerning his house, be established forever, and do as Thou hast spoken. 24 And let Thy name be established and magnified forever, saying, 'The LORD of hosts is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel; and the house of David Thy servant is established before Thee.' 25 For Thou, O my God, hast revealed to Thy servant that Thou wilt build for him a house; therefore Thy servant hath found courage to pray before Thee. 26 And now, O LORD, Thou art God, and hast promised this good thing to Thy servant. 27 And now it hath pleased Thee to bless the house of Thy servant, that it may continue forever before Thee; for Thou, O LORD, hast blessed, and it is blessed forever."

Some points to note:

  • The humility "Who am I…"
  • The recognizing of YHVH’s Might "… this was a small thing in Thine eyes…"
  • The understanding this was yet future "… a great while to come…"
  • The realization that this was in God’s heart "… according to Thine own heart…"
  • The accepting of YHVH’s intentions " do as Thou hast spoken …"
  • The redemption of Israel "Thy people Israel, whom God went to redeem for Himself…"
  • The courage to pray "…Thy servant hath found courage to pray before Thee.

Can we find the courage to pray for the Father’s Kingdom to come and fully fulfill the promise he gave to David?

Rev 3:7 "…He who is holy, who is true, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, and who shuts and no one opens…

Rev 5:5 … "Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals."

Rev 22:16 "I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things for the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, the bright morning star."

****

Our Father in heaven Thy Kingdom Come…

Heart of God

How does God feel about issues we face today?

Talents of Time

Have you heard it said "Time is money, or money is time."?  In Matthew 25 and Luke 19 we have the parable of the talents. (sum of money)  We know from scripture we all will one day give account of our lives, like in the parable, but do we consider the time we spend?   Every second of our day has value.  Are we using this gift from God wisely?  Let us multiply our time, not fritter it away in foolishness.

Romans 14:12 So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.

Lighter Side

Last Name Usage

On my first day in basic training, we were lined up in a
row, each of us in turn having to shout our last names.

After the guy next to me had yelled, "Florence," it was my
turn. I had no sooner called out my name when the training
instructor was in my face, demanding to know if I was some
kind of smart aleck. Satisfied that I wasn't, the red-faced
TI told me never to stand next to that guy again.

95 Theses to the Modern Evangelical Church

by Greg Gordon - (founder of SermonIndex.net)

75. The "church" has relied more on technology than God. (Zech 4:6; 1Cor 1:21; 2:4)

76. The prayer meeting is considered one of the least important meetings in the "church". (1Tim 2:1; Acts 4:31; Phil 4:6)

77. Pastors have never prayed less than they do in the "church" today. (Jer 10:21; Phil 2:21; Eph 6:18-19)

Cause and Effect

Scribbles

(By Michael Boldea Jr.)

Making our own gods

"Like the prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18) however, we will know the true impotence of the gods we’ve fashioned when we need them most. When we see the gods of our own making for what they truly are, nothing more than mists and vanities, it will be too late, and though we might cut ourselves and bleed, though we might cry out to the heavens for a sign, these deities we so revel in today, these gods we so honor and worship will remain as silent as the empty tomb from which the Christ, the Son of the one true God walked out of two millennia ago."

Ps 119:29 (NLT) Keep me from lying to myself; give me the privilege of knowing your law.

Consider

Opportunity is nowhere-or is opportunity now here?

The reason we can’t take it with us is that it goes before we do.

When I’m right, nobody remembers; when I’m wrong, nobody forgets.

The trouble with most of us is that we would rater be ruined by praise than saved by criticism.

Flattery is like chewing gum-enjoyed briefly, but don’t swallow it.

Some minds are like concrete-all mixed up and permanently set.

It’s not what I look like…it’s how others see me.

Stop and Listen

Then Moses and the Levitical priests said to all Israel, "Keep silence and hear, O Israel: this day you have become the people of the Lord your God." (Deuteronomy 27:9; ESV)

One of the most basic principles of biblical spirituality is that instead of living life in such a way as to get right with God, we are called to live life in response to being right with God. Anyone who is honest with themselves is keenly aware that our human frailty and failures demonstrate our lack of moral excellence and personal faithfulness to God or to anyone else for that matter.

The Bible pictures our spiritual state like that of Israel in oppressive bondage in Egypt. Unable to set themselves free, God sent Moses to rescue them… By freeing Israel from slavery, God made them to be his very own people. It was as his people they were called to live godly lives.

Yet such is our nature that we are slow to understand the depths of relationship God has established. So Moses says, "Be quiet and listen: today you have become the people of God." Not, "if you do the following, you will become the people of God." It's "you are the people of God, so do the following."

God knew the people would continue to fail spiritually and morally, that's why he provided the sacrificial system, while also preparing the nation for the coming of the Messiah. …spirituality demands personal humility and genuine dependence upon God, all the while accepting that right relationship with him can only be made real through his provision of forgiveness and acceptance, which at one time was through the sacrificial system; then eventually through the sacrifice of the Messiah (see Isaiah 53).

As in Moses' day, we who have been rescued by God through Yeshua the Messiah need to realize that we have become God's people because of what he has done for us. We cannot earn God's acceptance; we can only receive it by relying on Yeshua.

If that is the case then why do so many people struggle over their sense of belonging to God? It is pretty clear to me that the biggest reason for insecurity with regard to our relationship to God is that we are not listening to what he is saying to us. We focus on voices that contradict, not reinforce God's word.

It's time to heed Moses' words: "Be quiet and hear; this day you have become the people of the Lord your God."
