Angels
Serving the Saints

There is an angelic realm. So what can we know about Angels from Scripture?

The word "angel" is derived from the Greek word angelos, meaning "a messenger, envoy, one who is sent, an angel, a messenger from God."

From the Hebrew - Transliteration: Mal'ak

- Strong's: … as a deputy; a messenger; specifically of God that is an angel (also a prophet priest or teacher): - ambassador angel king messenger.

We believe angels are spirit beings created by God

Col 1:16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities-all things were created through him and for him.

Heb 1:14 Are they [angels] not all ministering spirits…?

We read one function of angels - As Messengers

Psalms 104:4 (NAS unless indicated) He makes the winds His messengers, Flaming fire His ministers.

(Note - we have mentioned in previous MEM issues, that a spirit is as a wind, also in Heb 1:7 And of the angels He says, "Who makes His angels winds, And His ministers a flame of fire." - quoting from Psalm 104:4).

There are many Scriptures that tell of the doings of God’s angels. Our purpose is not to cover them all but mention some to give one the essence of their important function in God’s plan for mankind.

Heb 1:14 Are they [the angels] not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?

Some angels are performing an important service to and for the saints - the heirs of salvation.

We all have some idea about angels. This may be good, or may be confusing. That is why we need to look at Scripture to paint us a picture, to help inform us of their important function in the body of Messiah. They are to assist us in the natural, the physical; for example we read:

Matt 4:1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread." 4 But He answered and said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.'" …

Matt 4:10 Then Jesus said to him, "Be gone, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.'" 11 Then the devil left Him; and behold, angels came and began to minister to Him.

This is interesting? The Holy Spirit lead Jesus (Yeshua) into the wilderness and after the great fast and temptations of Satan it was the angels that came and ministered to Him.

Ps 34:7 The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him, And rescues them.

Ps 91:11 For He will give His angels charge concerning you, To guard you in all your ways.

Angels convey to the YHVH what is going on in the earth

Matt 18:10 "See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you, that their angels in heaven continually behold the face of My Father who is in heaven.

Gen 18:20 And the LORD said, "The outcry of Sodom and Gomorrah is indeed great, and their sin is exceedingly grave. 21 I will go down now, and see if they have done entirely according to its outcry, which has come to Me; and if not, I will know."

And in Job

Job 1:6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them. 7 And the LORD said to Satan, "From where do you come?" Then Satan answered the LORD and said, "From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it." 8 And the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil." 9 Then Satan answered the LORD, "Does Job fear God for nothing? 10 Hast Thou not made a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side? Thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.

And Elisha

2Kgs 6:14 And he sent horses and chariots and a great army there, and they came by night and surrounded the city. 15 Now when the attendant of the man of God had risen early and gone out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was circling the city. And his servant said to him, "Alas, my master! What shall we do?" 16 So he answered, "Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them." 17 Then Elisha prayed and said, "O LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see." And the LORD opened the servant's eyes, and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

It seems we might all have an angel (now speaking about Peter)

Acts 12:15 And they said to her, "You are out of your mind!" But she kept insisting that it was so. And they kept saying, "It is his angel."

There are multitudes of angels

Rev 5:11 And I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands,

They praise YHVH (the LORD)

Ps 148:2 Praise Him, all His angels; Praise Him, all His hosts!

Ps 103:20 Bless the LORD, you His angels, Mighty in strength, who perform His word, Obeying the voice of His word!

Angels care for our needs

Ps 91:11 For He will give His angels charge concerning you, To guard you in all your ways. 12 They will bear you up in their hands, Lest you strike your foot against a stone.

Dan 6:22 "My God sent His angel and shut the lions' mouths, and they have not harmed me, inasmuch as I was found innocent before Him; and also toward you, O king, I have committed no crime."

Matt 26:53 "Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels? (about 72,000 angels)

Angels - Don’t take them lightly

Heb 13:2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.

They can make a difference - Amen

Proverbs

Proverbs on Hearing and Listening

Proverbs 25:13 (LXXE) As a fall of snow in the time of harvest is good against heat, so a faithful messenger refreshes those that send him; for he helps the souls of his employers.

YHVH’s Angels are messengers carrying out His commands.

The word "angel" is derived from the Greek word angelos, meaning "a messenger, envoy, one who is sent, an angel, a messenger from God."

Listen to and appreciate YHVH’s messengers

Saying(s)

"When I go outside at night and look up at the stars, the feeling that I get is not comfort. The feeling that I get is a kind of delicious discomfort at knowing that there is so much out there that I do not understand."

Rev 1:20 "As for the mystery of the seven stars which you saw in My right hand, and the seven golden lampstands: the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches

Job 38:7 When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy?

Did you know?

Let’s Talk Turkey

Turkey is the traditional choice for Thanksgiving dinner. As you, your family, and friends sit down to your meal, feast on these facts about this popular poultry:

- What’s in a name? Turkeys are native to North America.

- According to various sources, the word "turkey" comes from:

    • its Native American name "firkee";
    • the word "tuka," the Tamil word for "Peacock," coined by Christopher Columbus when he mistook the bird for a type of peacock (It’s actually a member of the pheasant family);
    • the first birds being shipped to England through the country of Turkey (by the Spanish)

and being mistaken for another bird with the same name from Africa.

By any name, there’re delicious.

- Yes, turkeys can fly. Wild turkeys, that is. Domestic turkeys are bred and raised to be so heavy they can’t take flight, but wild turkeys can fly at up to 55mph for short distances. They can also run at a top speed of 20-25 mph.

- Order your turkey early. About 45 million turkeys are consumed every Thanksgiving. The average Thanksgiving turkey weighs about 15 pounds. Approximately 20 million turkeys are the main course at Christmas dinner.

Life in Messiah

Patient Wisdom

Joseph had a dream, and Mary had a visit from an angel. Joseph told everyone about his dream, and it got him into trouble. Mary pondered these things in her heart. Which do you think took the wiser course of action? Both the dreams and the visitation were proven true, but Joseph had to learn a few things before the fulfillment was complete. Humble yourself and be patient, and He (our God) will exalt you in due time. (Adopted from a blog post by Dale Cresap)
